It is located in the suburb of Salterhebble and provides general services, emergency services and some specialist services. It was opened to patients in April 2001, and was officially opened by HRH Princess Anne on 15 March 2004. It was one of the first hospitals in the UK to be built under the Private Finance Initiative. The estimated cost, in 1994, was that a new, single site hospital with 614 beds would cost £34.85 million to build. By 2001 according to Graham Johnson, manager of the Catalyst consortium which built and now services and maintains the hospital the cost had risen to £103 million. leasing it back to Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Trust.
